Just the other day I had the opportunity to see this movie in theatres and I was nothing short of spectacular!
I have to say, Your Name. must definitely be one of my favourite movies of all time. I remember the first time watching it, and every plot twist and revelation was like a explosion going off in my head and I couldn't just help but think, "How do you come up with this stuff?! (and animate it so beautifully too?)". It seriously is really great, and I found it was actually better to go into watching it without any idea of what it's about, it really makes it fresh and surprising when you see it all.
BUT AHH IT'S SO GOOD.
The North American dub version that I saw in theatres was actually really good! I was slightly worried because oftentimes dub versions aren't nearly as good as the original Japanese, but it was done pretty well! The voices cast, though at the beginning it was a bit off, you kind of got used to them, and they did fit their characters pretty well! Another things I was really excited for was English versions being made of the OST, when I found out I was like,"DANG THAT'S DEDICATION" and it did help the overall sense of the movie when you understood the words behind the music. Before hearing it all myself though, I'd fallen in love with the ending theme, "Nandemonaiya" (or "It's Nothing") and had decided to make an english version of it! I'm actually quite fond of it, and I know there's probably a whole bunch of parts where it's awkward but I was still trying to draw the same types of images invoked by the original song so I'd say it's a decent enough accomplishment. But without further ado, here are the lyrics I came up with! Hope you enjoy! :D
"Nandemonaiya: English Version"
VERSE 1
This sorrowful gust of wind that blew by
Right between the two of us
Where did it carry all this pain
From just beyond the dusk?
Staring into the sky just as the
Magic hour settles in
This sky of blue swallows up my tears
When we stand as yang and yin
Father’s words were always cold
And a knife to hear in my heart
But somehow today it seems a spring thaw
Has begun to start
I never knew what kindness was
How to smile or how to dream
Every step that I took with you
Always followed your lead
PRE-CHORUS
A little longer now
Just a little while longer now
A little bit longer now...is fine
A little longer now
Just a little while now
We can stay together just a little bit longer now
CHORUS 1
Together we’re time flyers - everyday,
Every night climbing higher into the sky
Hiding and getting lost again ohh
Never able to reach the end
Crying when you’re happy and
Smiling even when you’re feeling lonely
It’s because a part of you
Has made it here before the rest has
VERSE 2
The toys that I prayed for endlessly
To the sun and the stars and moon
Are now collecting dust within the
Corners of my room
Today I have a hundred dreams -
I don’t know if they will come true
I’ll trade them all just to retake
A day with you
The girl in class who never speaks
That I’d never once told “hello”
Still gave a small smile as she walked away from my
“See you tomorrow!”
It’s strange - I find myself thinking of how
To try something new once in awhile
It’s all the better when you’re here with me
Offering up a smile
PRE-CHORUS
CHORUS 2
Together we’re time flyers - oh and I
Oh I swear I knew your
Knew your name
Knew your voice
And knew your face
Way before the day I met
You in that place
BRIDGE
The world would still go round
If you were not around
But the meaning of it all would be hazy to me
Cause living in a world
Where you’re not around
Would be like summer months without days on the beach
Living in a world
Where you’re not around
Would be a world where Santa was dark and gloomy
Don’t let there be a world
Where you’re not around ~
CHORUS 3:
Yes, we are time fliers - everyday
Every night climbing higher, don’t be meek
I can’t be the only one getting tired
Of the clock’s game of hide-and-seek!
“Nandemonaiya”
It can’t just be “nandemonaiya”
I’m on my way, this final page...
Together we’re time fliers - everyday
Every night climbing higher into the sky
Finding you as the milky way drops
Upon these twilight-lit mountain tops
My, you’re quite the showy crier
I want to stop your tears, see your eyes drier
As the rain starts to pour down from the sky
You stopped my hand, I understand and when I saw your tears I knew why
Why I cried out of joyfulness:
The reason I could laugh in that darkness
Was because a piece of us
Will outlast “nandemonaiya”s
