THE WOODS
She blazes the trail.
With a glint in her eyes
And a curse in her smile
Like she knows the world’s against her
But it doesn’t matter –
She was against it first.
Everyone around her astounded
With the ease at which she speaks,
The opinions she will argue,
The things that she can laugh at.
But from a safe distance
They watch.
Because you could get lost in those woods.
And they’re beautiful and marvelous
Especially as the sun sets on the horizon.
But they call her out for her eccentricities
And they continue to ask why her trees haven’t been cut down yet
Because they want to build something else -
Controllable
Uniform.
Something else just like everything else.
And she calls herself immoral
But I feel
She is more human than all of us.
She can have a conversation with anyone
And remembers every detail:
What you kept in that notebook
How your kids are doing
The names of your family members
Your previous job.
She keeps all those locked inside her
And makes sure they are safe.
The woods are dangerous, yes.
But every time I wander close
I feel as if
It’s only because
She wants to be.
